How’s Your Immune Health?
Well, if you’re anything like me, you’re the last to know about things LOL. I wasn’t aware that the immune system could be improved or bettered.
I spent most of my adult life thinking that the crappy immune system that I had is what I was stuck with.
UNTIL…my doctor said that I didn’t have long to live and to get my affairs in order.
I didn’t accept the doctor’s words that day and knew I had to do something drastic to change my fate.
You ever been there?
Maybe you haven’t been told to get your affairs in order. Maybe you have been given prescription after prescription and see NO RESULTS!?
Perhaps you’ve been told you’re labs, scans, & tests show that you’re within the “normal” range? Then, left wondering “is it all in my head?” and “well, now what do I do?”
Let’s dive into 4 ways that you can boost your immune system, naturally.
#1: Hand Washing Is Necessary
Hand washing is necessary for many reasons. Long before CoVid, SARS, MRSA, E.Coli… we had science-based facts that educated us in the necessity of practicing good hygiene.
A doctor that began the hand-washing practices around 1847, Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis, was rejected by the medical community. He passed away…and Louis Pasteur & Joseph Lister confirmed that Dr. Semmelweis’s “germ theory” was correct & that we indeed need to wash our hands & definitely sterilize our hands before surgery.
When I was teaching preschool, I lined my kids up at the sinks several times a day to wash their hands.

When you wash your hands, you will want just plain ole’ soap & water. Antibacterial soap actually compromises the immune system & DOES NOT kill germs.
While I was so on point washing those kiddos hands several times a day…there was something else I did that I will share with you that wasn’t good, at all.
#2: Cleaning Your Spaces
As you can imagine, when you work in any educational facility with young kiddos…keeping it clean is of paramount concern.
Once a week, we would take all of the plastic toys & soak them in bleach & water. We would rinse & dry them before giving them back to the kids…but still, bleach is not effective against all germs AND BONUS it thrashes the immune system when touched or inhaled.
Bleach can be rendered ineffective as water temp affects effectiveness, for example. It can also become more toxic and/or cause off-gassing when mixed with water, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide & many other cleaning agents.
The same issues arise with ammonia & cleaners that use ammonia.
Then, all the other days of the week, we would spray Lysol on the toys & surfaces to allegedly kill the germs.
What actually happened was that we were thrashing the kids’ immune systems every dang day with these toxic, non-effective cleaners.
In our defense, we just didn’t know any better. This was the beginning of the new millennia (1999-2008). We didn’t have access to the information that is easily found online nowadays.
Check out this adorable kiddo’s science experiment. She swabbed the bathroom & swiped it onto an agar agar slide (petry dish).
They allowed the bacteria to grow & added a couple of different traditional cleaners like Lysol and then also used an essential oil blend to one slide.
Since germs have outsmarted our antibiotics (superbugs), antibacterial soaps, and traditional cleaners like bleach & ammonia…it’s time to turn to what works.
Essential oils WORK! When you mix essential oils with vinegar, peroxide, baking soda, Castile soap, or water…you can clean nearly anything while eradicating germs AND preserving your immune system.
If you don’t recall, a manager of Buffalo Wild Wings lost his life after someone cleaning the floors mixed bleach and an acidic cleaner. This formed a gas that harmed 10+ people and caused the manager, a brand new father, to lose his life.
We are not all chemists, and we can cause harm to anyone that visits or dwells in our homes. Not saying that we mean to harm anyone, but sadly it does happen.
Bleach, ammonia, & Lysol can cause respiratory issues, skin irritation & allergies. So, if you have asthma, COPD, pneumonia, CoVid, the flu or any respiratory or allergy issue…these cleaners are going to exacerbate your condition.
Check out the EWG.org scores (below) of bleach, ammonia, and Lysol. Also, look to see what health issues are associated with using these common cleaning products.
There have been reports done that say we encounter 300-700 chemicals daily.
I’d post an article for you to peruse, but there are so many with varying numbers.
But just think about your own self-care routine.
- use typical store-bought hair products (shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, hair gel, pomade…)
- use typical store-bought makeup, remover, cleansers (even that fancy stuff at department stores)
- use typical store-bought toothpaste, deodorant, body soap, plastic brushes/tools
- use perfume, cologne, body sprays, body lotion, body powder
As you can see, before we ever leave the house for work or school, we have introduced many different chemicals to our self-care routine for our bodies to have to sort out.
We toxically overload ourselves with a lot of chemicals just from grooming.
That means that switching to non-toxic self-care is necessary for our immune systems to thrive.
I’ve been making my own self-care products like shampoo, body soap, toothpaste, & deodorant for a few years now just because I am doing all I can to support my liver & immune system.
Not that I’m advocating for everyone to make all their own products, but it does allow you to be able to choose exactly what goes into your self-care products.
You can bet your bottom dollar that essential oils go into all of my self-care recipes.
Here is where we all struggle. I don’t care if you’ve been vegan, keto, vegetarian, pescatarian, paleo…whatever the label, we all struggle to eat healthfully & stay the course.
Tempting foods and convenience are constantly bombarding us.
If processed and convenience foods didn’t taste good, it would be so much easier to forego them!
The thing is, we don’t need a diet. We need a lifestyle that we can enjoy healthy splurges and eat healthy foods every day.
Believe me, I understand the struggle.
However, EVERY time I put an unhealthy food or bevvie into my chow hole, I immediately regret it & KNOW that my lapse was not worth the repercussions.
I don’t beat myself up. I move forward with love for myself & the wisdom I gained while lapsing. My hopes are that you don’t beat yourself up either.
A really simple guideline on what you should be eating is:
Is the food from the actual plant? If it comes in a box or can & it has “ingredients” that are not just water & the food item…then that is processed food.
Fresh & frozen fruits and veggies are the best route. I’m not talking about TV dinners, either. LOL I’m saying; frozen broccoli, blueberries, cherries, peas, squash… and fresh potatoes, greens, sprouts, bananas, lemons…
WHOLE FOODS! You get the gist!
If you can get dried legumes/beans, that is best. However, if you get canned legumes/beans…you will want a non-BPA lined can & organic legumes/beans.
Choosing organic foods helps us ingest less pesticides and takes GMO’s out of the equation (usually, there have been some reports that some wrongful labeling has been happening).
You will want more organic fruits, veggies, beans/legumes, nuts/seeds in your diet so that you’re getting adequate nutrition, fiber, and health results.
With these 4 recommendations, you can begin implementing right away to help boost your immune system health.
